Mercedes Benz S-Class W220 (1998-2005)
Mercedes Benz's W220 series was the fourth generation of the S-Class. Auto introduced many innovative features, including the famous Airmatic suspension, Active Distronic cruise control and Pre-Safe system, which serves to prevent collisions with vehicles in the same lane. Sales of the car in the USA began in 1999, only gasoline engines were offered on the American market. The diesel engine available in the Mercedes W220 model was sold mainly in Europe. As standard, the car was rear-wheel drive, and from 2003 the S 430 and S 500 models offered an optional 4MATIC drive.
The structure is made of durable steel, and some elements are made of aluminum to reduce weight. As standard, the car had an Airmatic suspension with height adjustment in the range of 25 mm and with driving modes Comfort, Sport 1 and Sport 2. The S 55 AMG and S600 versions optionally offered Active Body Control suspension, which prevented the body from tilting when cornering. Visually, the car referred to the other models in the Mercedes range, although it did not have the typical spectacle headlights that could be found, for example, in the E-Class W210 or the CLK W210.
In 2002, the car underwent a facelift, which was sold as a version for the 2003 model year. Changes included, among others, the appearance of the grille, bumpers, lamps and mirrors (integrated turn signals), new wheel designs, Command system with 6.5" screen instead of 5.4", redesigned center console, introduction of the Pre-Safe system, blind spot monitoring assistant, lane keeping assistant (optional)) and 7 G-Tronic gearboxes in the S 450 and S 500. The S 65 AMG with 6.0 V12 Bi-Turbo engine was introduced. In the S 55 AMG, a compressor was introduced, which increased power from 360 to 500 hp.
It is worth knowing that the copies of the 1999 model year had two service actions. The first concerned the trunk springs, and the second - fuel injection.
On the basis of the Mercedes W220, the Mercedes Benz CL of the W215 series was also created. This is a two-door luxury coupe, which from the very beginning of production is based precisely on the S-class platform.

- 5.5 V12 Bi-Turbo - S 600, offered since 2003, power 493 hp, gearbox 5 G-Tronic;
- 6.0 V12 Bi-Turbo - S 65 AMG, offered in 2005, power 612 hp, gearbox 5 G-Tronic.

- S 430 - including four-zone climate control, Command system, leather seats with electric adjustment, Distronic cruise control, Bose audio system, Airmatic suspension, Pre-Safe system (from 2003), front and rear parking sensors, wooden inserts;
- S 500 - additionally, among others, seats with ventilation and massage, heated steering wheel, optional ABC suspension, 7" screens in the headrests;
- S 55 AMG - additionally, including AMG 18" rims, Airmatic sport version (-15 mm), AMG brakes, AMG body kit, sports seats, carbon fiber inserts;
- S 600 - equipment with S 500 and additionally, among others, ABC suspension, seats with electric adjustment, massage and ventilation, electric blinds at the rear, Burmeister audio system, keyless system;
- S 65 AMG - equipped with S 600 and additionally includes AMG 19" rims, AMG brakes, ABC suspension in sports version (-20 mm), AMG body kit, leather and Alcantara upholstery.
