Chrysler - history
The Origins of the Chrysler Brand
The Chrysler brand was founded by Walter Chrysler, who previously worked for Buick and General Motors, among others. Chrysler was formed as a result of the restructuring of the Maxwell Motor Company, which took place in 1925, then the Chrysler Corporation, based in Detroit, was born. In 1928, Chrysler bought Dodge Brothers and pulled the manufacturer into its portfolio. By 1936, the company had become the second player in the American market and maintained its position until 1949.
In 1957, Chrysler was the first to introduce electronic fuel injection, which was offered on Chrysler 300D, Dodge D500, DeSoto Adventurer and Plymouth Fury cars. In 1960, the company expanded its portfolio to include the Valiant brand. At the same time, Chrysler was the first of the American Big Three to introduce unibody bodies, in which the body and supporting frame form a single structure, which allows to reduce the weight of the vehicle and has a positive impact on handling and safety.
The first problems of Chrysler
In the 70s came the great fuel crisis and the first problems of Chrysler, which was not able to provide economical and reliable cars. At the end of the decade, Lee Iacocca took the helm, who secured $1.5 billion in funding from the US Congress and $2 billion in outside funding, which allowed the company to survive. The 1980s brought cooperation with Mitsubishi and the purchase of the Jeep brand. In 1987, a joint venture was formed between Chrysler and Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Thanks to him, among other things, the production of the Voyager model began in Europe.
Chrysler and Daimler
In 1998, Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz AG to form DaimlerChrysler AG. Then the brand started with a strong expansion in Europe. For Chrysler from the USA, Warsaw and Poland were good markets, as it had already been associated with private imports of Chrysler from the United States and limited official imports. Now Poles had the opportunity to acquire cars by official and more organized road and make repairs in an extensive network of authorized service centers. There were models such as the PT Cruiser and 300C, as well as the Jeep Commander. In Europe, the Jeep Grand Cherokee also began to be produced. Chrysler and Mercedes shared some of the engines and technologies among themselves.
Chrysler during the 2008 crisis
In 2007, the Chrysler brand was sold to investment fund Cerberus Capital Management, which acquired an 80.1 percent stake in Chrysler Group. In 2008, the economic crisis came, and a year later Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy. As a result, the government-subsidized Chrysler Group LLC was created, which introduced a stronger division of brands due to their nature. The company received $8 billion in loans from the Canadian Congress and Government.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
In 2011, Fiat was on the horizon, which bought shares in the Chrysler brand from the Treasury, and in 2014 bought back $3.65 billion worth of shares that belonged to the VEBA employee fund. This is how the great restructuring began. By the way, quite unusual decisions were made in the issue of rebadging models. For example, the Chrysler 300 was sold as the Lancia Thema. In 2017, problems came in the form of accusations of tampering with software to measure exhaust emissions. The company received fines for cars produced in 2016 and 2017, and in 2019 a settlement was signed that forced the company to repair 100,000 cars and pay hundreds of millions of dollars in fines to various organizations.
Chrysler in the ranks of Stellantis
In 2021, the European Commission agreed to merge Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with the PSA concern and thus Stellantis was created. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep survived, but their paths turned out differently. While the Dodge and Jeep offering has been developed, based on both American platforms and those used in Fiat cars. Chrysler, in turn, remained a brand with its own platforms, but at the same time its range was severely limited, which currently includes only two models.
Which Chrysler models are worth importing from the USA?
In the case of cars from the USA, we suggest that you bring relatively young cars, because then you can see the biggest difference in prices. At the same time, models from the last 10 years have not been officially available in Europe, so the only solution is to import Chrysler from the USA. The best choices are the Chrysler Pacifica, Chrysler Voyager and Chrysler 300S.
Chrysler Pacifica
The Chrysler Pacifica is a car that debuted in 2016 as the successor to the Town & Country model and is Chrysler's top family minivan. It was designed entirely from the ground up with an emphasis on comfort and a spacious interior. It is much better equipped compared to the Voyager model. The spaciousness of the interior can be optimally used thanks to the Stow'n'Go system, which allows the second and third rows of seats to be hidden in the floor. However, it is worth noting that it is used only in the version with a gasoline engine. Since 2017, the Chrysler Pacifica also functions as a plug-in hybrid, and there is no such solution there, since the hybrid drive needs more space.
The suspension of the Pacifica model provides unsurpassed comfort, and its rich equipment will satisfy even the most fastidious families. Pacifica is a frequent sight on Polish roads. The combination of luxurious travel conditions with efficient and reliable drives makes Poles eager to bring these cars from the USA.
Chrysler Voyager
Chrysler Voyager has always been positioned as the entry-level family minivan from Chrysler's lineup, but this does not mean at all that it is less comfortable. The manufacturer mainly focused on lowering the standard of equipment in order to be able to ensure a correspondingly low price. Thanks to this, Voyager was loved by millions of Americans. The biggest plus is that the 3.5 V6 Pentastar engine was left in it, which is famous for its simple construction and reliability. At the same time, the manufacturer made a compromise on the issue of finishing materials.
Chrysler 300
The 300 Series is Chrysler's answer to European and Japanese premium sedans. In the 90s there was a 300M model, later the 300C appeared, and then the sports 300S, the production of which was completed in 2023. The offer included two engines - 3.5 V6 Pentastar and 5.7 V8 HEMI combined with rear-axle or all-wheel drive. The last generation of the 300 Series was introduced in 2011 and underwent a facelift in 2015, which consisted of a facelift and the addition of advanced driver support systems.
