The GLS name only appeared after the facelift of the 2nd generation GL, which was introduced in 2015 as a model for the 2016 model year. Exterior changes included a new grill, LED headlights with Intelligent Light System (dynamic cornering lighting) as standard in selected variants. Changes in the interior include the new Comand NTG 5.0 system with an 8" touchscreen, an improved steering wheel with touch switches. Among the technical changes in the Mercedes GLS, the engine in the GLS 550 gained more power, the power units became more economical, and in some cases the 7G-Tronic Plus gearbox was replaced by 9G-Tronic. Added adaptive Magic Body Control suspension with camera system and optional Drive Pilot Level 2 with up to 60 mph.

After the 2015 facelift, which introduced, among other things, the name change to GLS, the range of engines was reduced from 3 to 2 power units:

- GLS 63 AMG - V8 biturbo gasoline, 5.5 l, 2017-2019 - volume 5461 cm3, power 577 hp, maximum torque 760 Nm, gearbox 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT, average fuel consumption 16.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle.

Mercedes GLS X167 (2019-present)
The Mercedes-Benz GLS of the X167 series was unveiled in April 2019 at NAIAS in New York and production started in October. The car was rolling off production lines again in Alabama. The changes included an extended wheelbase by as much as 60 mm, the addition of mild-hybrid drives (MHEV). The car shares the modular MHA platform with the GLE model and is 150 kg lighter compared to the GLS X166. The 4MATIC+ drive with torque vectoring and electronic differential at the rear has appeared.
In 2024, the car underwent a facelift, which included, among others, a new grill, matrix LED headlights with Digital Light, the MBUX NTG 6.0 system with a 12.3" touchscreen, an increase in additional power in the MHEV drives by 1 HP, improved transmission software 9G-Tronic.

- Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC - V8 biturbo gasoline mild-hybrid, 4.0 l, 2021-2025 - 3982 cm3 capacity, 550 hp + 22 hp with EQ Boost until 2023 and 550 hp + 23 hp after 2023, maximum torque 730 Nm + 200 Nm with EQ Boost, 9G-Tronic gearbox, average fuel consumption 13.8 l/100 km in the combined cycle;
- Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC+ - V8 biturbo petrol mild-hybrid, 4.0 l, 2021-2025 - volume 3982 cm3, power 603 hp + 22 hp EQ Boost until 2023, 603 hp + 23 hp after 2023, maximum torque 850 Nm + 200 Nm with EQ Boost, AMG Speedshift TCT 9G gearbox (with Race mode), average fuel consumption 14.9 7 l/100 km in the combined cycle.
